Extra Cash

9 Companies that will pay you to test websites (No experience necessary!)

Have you ever visited a website that just wasn’t right? Maybe the menus were in the wrong place,  or you hit cancel instead of submit because the buttons were in a weird order.

Guess what? There are companies that will pay you to check for these kind of design flaws. It’s called usability testing, and it’s a great way to make some extra cash while helping business improve their site.

What is a usability test?

Website owners want to minimize issues that cause users to leave in frustration. So, they study how an average user would use the site out in the wild.

This is where you come in.

While recording your screen and voice, you’ll perform a specific task or answer questions about your overall impressions. You’ll explain your thought process out loud and voice frustrations like, “Where the heck is the submit button?”, or, “The link that says, ‘see the pretty cats’ doesn’t work.”

To get an idea, here’s a great example. Pretty simple right?

Bonus: Watch this web designer’s technologically-challenged mom test sites. hehe

How much will I make?

Most companies pay between $5 and $10 per test. This doesn’t sound like much, but the tests only take a few minutes. It’s a better return on your time than online surveys.

Usability testing is an extra cash gig. It shouldn’t be considered a reliable source of income because you may not always qualify for tests and may only get a few per month. But you can increase your odds of getting more by signing up for multiple companies and doing quality work.

How do I get started?

Here are nine of the most popular sites. Of these, I have only used ErliBird, Enroll and Userlytics personally, but they are all well-known, legitimate companies that have great user feedback.
